The Sacred Kanwar Yatra

The Kanwar Yatra is the central pilgrimage associated with Shravani Mela. During the holy month of Shravan, Kanwariyas travel to Ajgaivinath Dham at Sultanganj to collect sacred Ganga water and carry it by Kanwar to Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar.

The pilgrimage is traditionally undertaken on foot. Many devotees wear saffron-coloured clothing and carry decorated Kanwars containing the sacred water.

The journey represents devotion, discipline, faith, endurance and service to Lord Shiva.

The Deoghar District Administration describes the Sultanganj-to-Babadham Kanwar pilgrimage as a 109-kilometre journey on foot.

Baba Baidyanath Dham

The sacred destination where Kanwariyas offer the holy Ganga water to Baba Baidyanath Jyotirlinga.

देवघर स्थित पवित्र धाम जहाँ कांवरिया बाबा बैद्यनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग पर गंगाजल अर्पित करते हैं।

Distance note: The pilgrimage distance is commonly described differently in different sources. This website currently follows the 109-kilometre description published by the Deoghar District Administration for the Sultanganj–Babadham Kanwar pilgrimage.

Beginning the Pilgrimage

Pilgrims arrive at Ajgaivinath Dham and collect sacred Ganga water. The water is placed in a vessel and carried on a Kanwar.

After completing the necessary preparations and religious rituals, Kanwariyas begin their journey towards Baba Baidyanath Dham.

The route passes through areas of Bihar before continuing towards Deoghar in Jharkhand.

This sacred offering completes the principal religious purpose of the Kanwar Yatra.
